The Shadow as a Seductive Poison of Myth
Jul 30th
The Dark Shadow
Civilization, or what I call, “The Machine” is a very dense, dark shadow in all of us. Why are we not aware of it? It is because the central human-manipulating archetype in civilization’s shaman mythology known in Psychology as “The Shadow,” goes a long way to covering it up.
“The Shadow” as mythological archetype is a necessary civilizing fiction especially established in early development stages of human minds as machine mind. “The Shadow” is what Jungian Psychology and since Freud and Jung, mainstream Psychology erroneously defined as repressed weaknesses, shortcomings and instincts, (portrayed as base and human). The Shadow Myth in itself contributes to the darkness of the machine. In early development, the machine wants us to chronically repress and gradually start to project this darkness onto and into each other and into the machine, as a moving Dark dynamic to always have to be uncovered and overcome in later development, to be made conscious as an ever-present personal human animal shortcoming.
As members of “society” sic. we then have the “SOCIAL” RESPONSIBILITY to consciously acknowledge and address OUR Shadow throughout our lives as a matter of self-meditative practice. This fundamental self-deprecating mechanism is an institutional requirement for “maturity” of enslaved civilized minds in all civilization, not only the East. The very loose popular Freudian label for this “social” demand, is “overcoming the Ego.” More complete for me in the Freudian psychology: Id, Ego and Superego work as complementary pseudo-archetypal components of mythological fiction in our seduction.
The Golden Shadow
The story gets worse. Not only does the machine institute, repress an opportunistically revisit its own accusation of our weaknesses and guilt. In our elaborate characterizations of our self in early childhood development, it also institutes and represses the so-called ”good qualities.” As The Shadow, the mythological good and bad together form an organically self-organizing dynamic opportunistically manipulating the human mind as machine mind, in interplay of delusional tales of villainous guilt and heroic redemption.
The machine thus also defines our repressed good side in the maturity/enlightenment mythology as The Golden Shadow in us. This golden part of our archetype is the opportunity to ascribe to the human element gross exaggerations and lies about specific, functional kinds of human intelligence, beauty, freewill and agency in a civilizing process in which our human animal potential has been utterly compromised and we are actually near-complete robotic zombies.
Machine: an Expanding Zone of Emergent Potential

This train of thought has been very effective so far; even though I am quite sure that the more conventional rational agenda would disagree and even scorn it.
I must admit I am not very practiced in mathematics and physics. I did finish first year calculus, chemistry and physics (1989) and started some mechanics and statics (1990), but I have been reading informally. I am now reading an outstanding textbook on logic. My formal degree is in Economics (1986). I also formally studied English Literature (1981). However, I am 51 and I have nearly two decades of radically skeptical reading, thinking and writing behind me.
It is a glaring mental error of civilized thinking to dismiss the all-important perspective that dependent reality (DR) is imaginary. Conceptually DR is a virtual world. It is not part of the same continuum as independent reality (IR). Our existence is part of the IR continuum, but not our phenomenological reality. The world of our mind is a completely different world. It is pure imagination. What people popularly analyze and think about as “reality” is completely imaginary. We imagine when we think knowledge describes existence. Religion and science are equally part of that imaginary world. We imagine when we do science. No, I do not think we need BOTH Science and Art as you suggest. We need to imagine Science as art. Science is art. The thorn in the side of Science as a human-existential endeavor has been that we imagine it not to be art, not to be mythological. We imagine it to be empirical, or real.
We can certainly conceptualize IR, but in one way only: that it is existential. The only valid representation of IR is unity. We can only accurately think of IR as the singularity of our human existence. Therefore, my suggestion is that for humans, the only sane way to tell DR mythology is to accept human existence as singularity, and not to submissively seek knowledge and higher meaning (like “unity consciousness” or “god”) in the feverish mechanical expansion of the fractal imagination of the machine. We ought to stop defining ourselves in such shamanic terms.
I also do not believe there is a closed system, but anything is possible in the imaginary world of DR. In DR, we imagine scientific experiments as closed. Yet existentially whatever they are is in IR. What we imagine as controlled scientific experiments, are open in ways we cannot imagine, because they are in IR. Scientific experiments and all DR-mythology are wide, wide open in IR and we have no comprehension or control over what they are because we cannot know the dynamics in IR. We cannot know the consequences of open determinism/probability. We cannot predict the future. This is why as a species we cannot afford to believe in anything but our own singular human existence, when we imagine our mythology. Unfortunately our species extinction is only an externality (like psychopathic corporations externalizing damage to outside parties) when we imagine the definition of our existence to be absolutely flexible, enabling us to expand it to include “machine.”
I know this is a radical mythology, but I think if it could become widespread, it may save us from species extinction.
1) How does my skepticism account for organizational, architectural and engineering accomplishments? Maybe it would help if I say that we are so full of shamanic conceit and tell such tall stories about our civilized successes, because we can somehow sense that we have no clue of the existential ramifications of our minds in abject submission to imagination-valorized markets.
2) How could we more directly paint our experienced reality (ER) and our non-experienced reality (NER) in this human-singularity mythological perspective? We can know that some independent reality (IR) has affected us, and some not, but we cannot define what has affected us. We cannot know it experientially/empirically. We can draw the ER-NER boundary or horizon (H) only in myth: in dependent reality (DR). We draw the ER-NER duality, like all dualities, as a figment of imagination. You say effective theories can tunnel through H and reduce the size of NER. I think that idea is invalid because no matter what we think or do, as long as we exist, we remain in existential singularity. The scenario you paint is enlarging ER. NER is virtually infinite. We are not affecting it. Instead, in our DR world of imagined analysis, we could further imagine H to have volume. H is actually an indefinitely expanding zone (EZ) a primed potentiality between ER and NER, and it exists because of the expansion of ER. EZ is an expanding zone generating more questions than answers, energizing extra-human evolution of IR. Doing science is harmonizing with the machine, without any concept whatsoever of the distinctive effect on human IR, except intuitively about on/existing or off/non-existing. Actually, we could paint our DR such that there is no ER and NER. In its place, imagine only the massive question generating EZ, exponentially expanding, affecting IR ever more potently in its hunger for, and generation of artificial intelligence (AI), and so fatally endangering the integrity of human existential singularity. We could narrowly paint this as technological singularity, or post-human IR. Instead as machine-minds, we call it, “transhumanism” or “rebecoming what we are” (after being broken in”The Fall”) or achieving Nirvana or being part of expanding sacred intelligence into the universe, or whatever. It is all nonsense, because in IR the human animal is extinct, and the story is over. There is no more human singularity.
Notes for further discussion:
1) Other animals do not talk and reflect. They live and think in IR. See DR in a slightly different depiction as in the first paragraph of the post above, as an expansion of IR. In the sense that humans are animals, DR unpredictably changes IR, colors it, distorts it, and renders it dystopian. It effectively destroys life.
2) The cultural realism, even the materialism of both Western philosophical rationalism (Aristotle and monotheism) and Eastern spiritual development (Confucianism, Daoism, Hinduism, Buddhism) are similar in its systematic submission of the human animal to complex accounts of an actual omnipotent and immortal force. Civilized thinking is pervasively a self-fulfilling prophecy.
The Vulgarities of Immortality
Oct 29th
I am under no false impression that I am intelligent enough to read and write definitively. I am recursively consuming and reproducing the appropriate stuff, so maybe one day very soon I can contribute a strong thread to an effective collective resistance to the mythological supernatural #$%^@&*(! we have been brainwashed into.
NO human is nearly intelligent enough to make sense, and least of all the most successful. They are most misleading because of the false authority of their position and the mechanical leverage for their convoluted rubbish. It is all utter nonsense being blatantly power-marketed as meaningful. If you look again at what I am writing, that is ALL I am saying. The only meaning is our MORTAL existence. The rest is shamanic crap. Sorry for that one slightly bad word. As a rule I don’t use them, but sometimes it gets too much. The idiocy must be stopped.
Our mortal human animal nature is not vulgar. It is wonderful. The vulgarity is the cynical, shamanic lies of immortality.
Losing Our Humanity
Oct 12th
Jung’s collective unconscious is rooted in stories, in one hundred thousand years of shamanism and mythological archetyping. The transcendent is not real. It is imaginary. That a very rich transcendent imagination is real, does not make real what we imagine as real because of our ancestral imprinting. It seems to me much of civilization’s systemic cognitive manipulation of human animals finds hooks directly in our collective unconscious.
The function of the hundred thousand year history of shamanism and the collective unconscious is to transcend and effectively cloak the dismal fact of being cognitively machine-parisitized. Why then does enlightenment and religion feel so good? It feels good to believe in something we imagine is greater than ourself: contrasted against how terrible we feel when we are only vaguely aware that we are delusional because of the inner mental slavery of our participation in the insane process of relentlessly driving our species into extinction.
… and to be vaguely aware that we have lost something very precious (we cannot know what it is, we are so far gone) when we lost our humanity.
The Root Cause of All Atrocity
Sep 5th
“Cry my beloved country – Today a young black man who killed himself was buried. His farewell letter: I cannot get my identity book from home affairs as I couldn’t tell them when I was born and thus I cannot get a job. I’m no thief and would rather die than steal to stay alive. First white, now black, SA governments have a utter knack for fucking up our beautiful land.” – Nelia Vivier-Symington.
SA government = South African government.
My NOTE TO NELIA
This is not about race or government. This is about the metaphysics that historically has endlessly repeated the same atrocity of destroying human life.
My tone and language in this post in attack of the superficiality and artificiality of this very official conceptual thread on human feelings, puts me in mortal danger of being branded heretic and arrogant and burnt at the stake. (aka ignored)
Your comment so tokenly faults the “SA Government!”
Irrespective of government and race, the same sad human story is not only bound to continue repeating, if humanity does not wake up: the way we think will emphatically extinguish our species. The power and sadness of these kinds of official accounts are pathetic melodrama next to the deep, deep power and sadness underlying it.
Your lament here is journalistic because that is how you have been alllowed and trained to speak. Similarly you speak psychology like a psychologist. Humans do not need this formalistic kind of thinking and speech if we want to survive. We need speech deep-structurally subversive of this kind of convention
Your brother always.
[Of cours Nelia has, not unexpectedly, cut my initial statement - similar to my first sentence here- out of her post, telling me that it is not about me]
Nelia, it is not about me. I am about humanity. Your inclination to cut me off is not about me. It is about my human voice.
This kind of infuriating tragedy is happening all over the world. Mexico is a hell-hole of gangs and drug-trafficking. American prisons are out of whack and there is a meth and crack epidemic in US rural areas and in the inner city. India and Pakistan are at each other’s throats. Islam is invading Europe, while god does not even exist! I am suggesting the root of the problem is that humanity has never used language as it should be used, whether humans started speaking fluently 400,000 ya or 50,000 ya is academic. We use language shamanically, and the grave error is that there is something inherently more sacred than our own existence, whether it is God or Words.
To be expanded considerably ….

Now that is ridiculous, sheer madness….
Pierre Rousseau
What is ridiculous, Leon?
Leon van Wyk
That home affairs treat humans like that.
Pierre Rousseau
I know, but it is even more ridiculous that people cannot see that if we do not address the root causes, the atrocity will repeat itself in different forms.
Leon van Wyk
Or should I say the machine’s treat for us ? One down, more to go.
Pierre Rousseau
Right. When it explodes it may very well be the death of 7 billion humans.
Leon van Wyk
He had mistakenly believed that with no identity , he was nobody, according to rules made by what or who ?
Pierre Rousseau
Yes, and that is exactly why most people commit suicide either directly or they commit suicide by sucking up (subjecting themselves) to and perseverating in some symbol. They go into a positivity funk. It may be about beauty, power, liberty, freedom, ideology or cause. It blinds them to the root cause.
Leon van Wyk
Pierre, I think it already exploded, the kids are trained to kill humans by playing these stupid computer games. The gun being finally turned on its owner, a single blast of glory, and our hero is extinct……..
Pierre Rousseau
Yes I agree it has already exploded in a relative sense, but the exponential function is not yet vertical. Tomorrow’s change is still like an explosion relative to yesterday explosion. What I mean is that the explosion is still accelerating. I have always suggested the ultimate ass-whipping will happen by the end of 2010. It certainly appears that my prediction is not far off.
Leon van Wyk
Yes, it might be a good idea to kill all technological advances. What I am referring to is kill all the brainwashing devices. From my point of view, a decent network is being built to control humans, especially cellphones, computer networks and games. I agree that will happen soon. The stage has been set, we can still topple the support structure if we want to survive.
Pierre Rousseau
The machine is currently blatantly on a fact-finding mission. Not only is it gathering information on what we say and think in “social” systems like Facebook, Google and personal blogs, it is actually monitoring our deep psychology by tracking everything we do. And it is openly developing the most devious millitary weapons to mislead us and kill us. Humans will very soon lose complete control of these systems. And it knows where we live and our daily routines.
This means that the privacy issue is a complete joke.
Our Humble Art
Sep 1st
I think therefore I am: Descartes – 16th century philosopher … I art therefore I am: Merle O’Brien – 21st century philosopher … art as reflection of my human spirit – paraphrasing Merle O’Brien.
It is early yet in my investigation, but here are some (paradoxical) myths at the root of our existential crisis.
The myth that:
1) – there is something extra-human universal that is more than us. We call it “god-spirit.”
2) – our primary focus should be the development of the single self as maturation of that spirit in us as if it is light. Thus miraculously we call it “human spirit/soul.”
3) – we are the masters of the world because we connect to that god-human spirit, even though it is not (initially) us: since it is our Creator.
If you are honest you would admit guru-shaman types opportunistically elementally shift from human spirit to god spirit as if in mythical god-human spirit continuum.
Alternative Focus:
We belong in the plural, “all of us,” not in any subsumed role, but simply as us, surviving human animal, with a very small, very easily seducable measure of reflective intelligence. We ought to speak a completely more humble kind of language to reflect that.
Modifying “I art, therefore I am” to “we art, therefore we are.” Apart from the joy of mere existence without reflection, when we think or do individually, all humanity should be in us as primal principle of all meaning: instead of “god.” I think the god-human enlightenment/spirit imperative is impoverishing of our common humanity – it evolved historically in support of king-gods and “godly” kingdoms. It is not what we are about.
To Speak Or Not To Speak
Apr 22nd
A friend asked me the following question on my Facebook.
“In order for you to judge whether the system is crap you need to define what crap is: does crap equal the system? What is this thing you are talking about?”
The thing I am talking about is that reason has humans extremely confused about what to believe in, instead of, as social animals, believing in our own human existence. A newborn does not ponder. It believes only in its own existence. As we mature, we urge each other to believe in as real what we should naturally perceive as only icons, pictures, or stories. Once we believe in these perceptions, we are able to gradually become familiar with them in terms of emotional associations enough to be able to symbolize them as formal concepts. We go even further when we abstractly and successively group or categorize these concepts as concepts and those concepts again as concepts, in a virtual functional reflection of the nested constructs of organization. Maturity means having conditioned yourself to the organization of a many-layered complex holarchical construct of reality in your mind. The organizational processes organize meaning through us with as principle the countless “things” to believe in, as if the aggregate of all that we believe in is a thing that we identify with so strongly that it defines us to doubt our own existence (objectively!). Our faith in ideological organization dominates our faith in our own existence.
The leveraged unpredictability of indefinite exponential growth of technology and artificial intelligence means the environment is changing ever faster away from what is human-friendly. We have fallen into the trap of taking the perspective of the machine. We identify with the machine. Our machine-existentialism is an ideological trap.
This answer to your question of what crap is also explains what human friendly is. Human friendly is refraining from holding any abstract mythology as more real than our own existence. The sign of human unfriendly is when we are prepared to kill anyone for a “logical” reason. When I say indefinite growth, I mean relative to the scale, and human existence on the current path is coming to a rapid end. The Terminator movies or The Matrix movies are exceedingly shallow fairy tales compared to what is actually already happening. Take 1) the full environmental vibrancy of the animal kingdom as an example, in all its dynamic multiplicity, instead of 2) as a neat story of a collection of single species. The first is actual, and fundamentally indefinable. The second is a story. Indeed, we are all posing as wizards to think we can define existence as in 1). It is the posing that is fatal. That is all I am saying. My argument is no more than a tiny move over keeping my mouth shut about “reality.”
I instruct. I do not debate. The same way humans are perfectly capable of believing in gods that do not exist, they believe in reality that does not exist; and it gets worse the older they get. You can actually see it grow as young people mature. It is the nested laying down of elaborate associative networks of bullshit in their minds.
Existence is one. It is unity. No debate is necessary, but I have so loved humanity, that I will speak.
